Industrial Uses of Catalysts

Cataylists are used in industry because they help to speed up the reaction time. Here are a few examples of different uses of catalysts in industry.

  • Catalytic cracking of gas oil involves the catalyst Zeolite. It produces a gas, a liquid and a residue.

  • Making nitric acid involves the catalysts Platinum and Rhodium.

  • Making syntheisis gas involves the catalyst Nickel.

What is a Catalytic Converter?

Modern cars have a catalytic converter and this helps to reduce the amount of toxic gases. Catalytic converters use a platinum and rhodium catalyst and these have a high surface area. This then increases the rate of reaction of carbon monoxide. The product from this is carbon dioxide and water, and this in turn is less harmful to the environment. The catalysts were designed to work well at the high temperatures found in the engines of the cars.
